PRESS RELEASE

The West Papuan People’s Petition 2017

With thanks to God,

The United Liberation Movement for West Papua firmly commits itself to using United Nations mechanisms for resolving the West Papuan people’s right to self-determination, consistent with the ULMWP’s road map for liberation. In order to achieve this result the ULMWP will continue to garner support and recognition from all States and forums in all regions and sub-regions of the world including, but not limited to, Melanesia, the Pacific, Africa, and the Caribbean. We pursue these goals in order to realise our people’s noble desire for West Papua to become an independent, sovereign and self-governing country.

The ULMWP Board Committee, which has the mandate to govern the organisation and direct the efforts of the Executive, publicly affirms that the petition, which expresses the aspirations of the West Papuan people, has been safely delivered to the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Since the petition was launched by the ULMWP Board Committee on the 5th of April 2017, it has been managed by Petition Committee and distributed throughout the land of West Papua. In the face of persistent threats, intimidation and direct violence by the Indonesian colonial state, 1.8 million West Papuans signed the petition, indicating their firm desire for a free and fair internationally supervised vote.

This demand for self-determination has now been communicated to all nations of the earth so everyone will know the West Papuan people’s aspirations.
