Protest outside Indonesian Embassy calls for UN visit to West Papua

September 28, 2023

A demonstration was held outside the Indonesian Embassy in London on 26th September following a pair of massacres in West Papua.

Protestors called for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to be allowed to investigate abuses in West Papua. Over 85 countries have now called for the OHCHR visit to happen. This includes all member states of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS), the European Commission, and individual nations including the UK, Spain, and the Netherlands. Despite promising to facilitate a UN visit in 2018, Indonesia have employed consistent delaying tactics to prevent it from happening.

As Benny Wenda wrote, the recent massacres in Fakfak and Yahukimo underscore the urgent need for international intervention in West Papua. The hidden genocide must be exposed to the world.
