Footage emerges from Paniai massacre in West Papua

April 9, 2015

The human rights organisation, Minority Rights Group International has released footage from the aftermath of the Paniai massacre in West Papua which resulted in deaths of at least 4 West Papuan children and the injury of up to 21 others.

Last December, West Papuan children who were decorating a Christmas tree asked that Indonesian soldiers turn their headlights on as they drove past. The soldiers tortured the children and shot one of them. Soon after, the families of the children that were tortured held a peaceful Waita dance as a demonstration against military violence against children. The Indonesian military opened fire into the crowd and killed at least 4 West Papuan youths. 2 others are also believed to have died as a result.

Notice: This footage is distressing

The Free West Papua Campaign joins Minority Rights Group International, Amnesty International and others in demanding that a full and thorough investigation be held into the massacre and that full justice be carried delivered. We demand an end to all human rights violations in West Papua and a withdrawal of the Indonesian military.

We ask people everywhere to please continue spreading the message about what is happening in West Papua and not let the terrible massacre of Papuans continue.
