The people of West Papua are calling on YOU to sign the global petition for an Internationally Supervised Vote in West Papua!

The completed petition will be swum 69 kilometres across Lake Geneva in August 2017, and handed straight to the United Nations. This could be the mechanism to get West Papua back on to the UN’s agenda, so please make sure you sign and share it as widely as possible. Together, we can help West Papuans’ voices be heard by the people who have the power to put an end to this genocide.

Koteka Wenda, a West Papuan youth and campaigner living in exile in the UK, says of the petition:

“Please understand that this is by far the most important action that I have ever shared. All that I ask you to do is to first watch the video and then click the petition link below. Sign the petition for West Papua to receive a fair, internationally supervised vote and to put an end to pain and suffering that my people have been enduring for over 50 years! Thank you. Wa wa.”

How can you help?

  • Sign and share the petition as widely as possible. Please. If all of our facebook followers did this and each got one friend to sign, we would have 500,000 signatures.

  • Follow, share and re-tweet the progress of the petition from our facebook and twitter.

Please get in touch if you would like to be involved and can help us promote the petition: office@freewestpapua.org.

On 24th January the Global Petition for West Papua was launched in the British Parliament, in support of the Westminster Declaration for an Internationally Supervised Vote for West Papua. Written by the International Lawyers for West Papua as a legal submission and launched by Lord Harries of Pentregarth, human rights activist Peter Tatchell and Andrew Smith MP, the event was also attended by representatives from various human rights organisations and friends of West Papua.

The petition has already been endorsed, and blessed, by many people from West Papua, including political prisoner Steven Itlay who bravely sent a video message from prison in Timika. The members of the ULMWP have also formally supported the petition.

The petition has also been launched in West Papua, several Pacific nations, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia and is already gathering new support for West Papua’s cause from people in India, Bangladesh and across the world.

Over the past few years, awareness and concern about West Papua has been growing and THIS is our opportunity to harness the support of individuals and groups across the world. Through this petition we can add our voices together and call on those in power to put an end to Indonesia’s 55 year long reign of terror.

The petition reads:

Dear Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres,

As concerned citizens from around the world, we call on you to urgently address the human rights situation in West Papua and to review the UN’s involvement in the administration of West Papua that led to its unlawful annexation by Indonesia ‐- and the human rights abuse that continues today.
We call upon you to: – appoint a Special Representative to investigate the human rights situation in West Papua;
– put West Papua back on the Decolonisation Committee agenda and ensure their right to self‐determination ‐- denied to them in 1969 -‐ is respected by holding an Internationally Supervised Vote (in accordance with UN General Assembly Resolutions 1514 and 1541 (XV)).

Thank you all for your continued support. Let’s all get signing and sharing this petition to #LetWestPapuaVote!
