Campaigns

UN Review

There is an international campaign calling on Kofi Annan to instigate a review of the UN's role in the 1969 Act of Free Choice. You can help by writing to organisations, politicians and influential people asking them to support the campaign. Background information and a model letter for people to send to Kofi Annan can be found here. The complete list of campaign supporters is available here and if you want to find out more information about the campaign email wpaction@iol.ie.

Koteka Prisoner Support

This is a campaign to offer support and solidarity to West Papuan political prisoners. There are three main aspects to this support: 1. Urgent actions which involve telephoning prisons and police when people are arrested and there is the greatest fear of them being tortured. There has been many confirmed reports that when the Indonesian police realise the outside world is watching they are less oppresive. 2. Writing to prisoners. 3. Collecting money for prisoners and their families. Money is needed for buying food and sometimes even water and to help families travel for prison visits etc. For more info, including prisoner lists and contact details see here and to receive urgent alerts send an email to koteka_prisoner_support@westpapua.net.

Direct Cash Aid

This is always needed by Papuans involved in the struggle. Maybe to help with communications or travel expenses, or for printing books etc. Previously groups have also supplied medical aid, cameras, computers and training. Get in touch with a local solidarity group to find out if they are involved in any of these projects.

Take Action

Solidarity demonstrations, protests and actions have been growing over the last few years. Indonesian embassies have been picketed and occupied, Indonesian officials have had business disrupted and corporate offices have been occupied and blockaded. Keep an eye on websites or contact a local solidarity group to find out when days of action are taking place. Or organise yourself. Lists of corporations involved investing in West Papua can be found here.

Spread the Word

The story of the West Papuan struggle is slowly reaching the outside world. You can help by getting articles published, showing films, hosting talks, putting up exhibitions, organising gigs etc. For more help see resources.
